THE PROCEDURE – FROM DIAGNOSIS TO AFTERCARE

DIAGNOSIS AND DECISION-MAKING

X-ray images and CT scans are taken by dentists. After gathering the information, the possible treatment options are accessed. The advantages and disadvantages of the various solutions are openly discussed so that you are well-informed on every aspect of the procedure before making a decision.

Sufficient bone: an essential prerequisite. Sufficient bone must be present in order for implantation to go ahead. There are patients who have insufficient bone and require augmentation, for example if a tooth has been missing for a long time and the jaw has already receded.

AFTERCARE

Implants are an excellent option and investment in your health. With the right aftercare, they can last for a lifetime. For such a long-term success, taking care of your implant is important. As with natural teeth, implants require the same regular check-ups and conscientious oral hygiene. Once you follow these guidelines, your implants can be maintained for decades.

Insertion of the implant

The dental implant is surgically inserted under local anesthesia. A temporary restoration may be placed on the implant at time of surgery for the healing stage.

Healing phase

The healing phase usually lasts between a couple of weeks and a few months. During this period, ideally, the bone around the implant grows and integrates with the implant surface – a process called osseointegration. Good oral hygiene is vital in the healing stage of the treatment. Once healed, this artificial root acts as a base for fixing individual crowns, multi-tooth bridges, or an entire dental prosthesis.

The restoration is put in place

The dental laboratory uses an impression of the implant site to produce the crown, bridge or denture. The dentist will place the restoration after the dental implant has healed.

THE MAIN BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS

A DENTAL IMPLANT MERGES WITH YOUR BODY

Even the best prosthesis will always be a foreign part that requires extensive care. By contrast, a dental implant is simply an artificial root, which on healing, merges with the body and acts likes a natural one.

Dental implants preserve your facial structure.

Implants transmit chewing forces to the jaw bone. This is not the case if teeth are missing or when a conventional prosthesis has been put in place. If these forces cease, the bone may slowly recede and the shape of the face may change over time.

benifits-2.jpg
Dental implants maintain your smile.

Functionality and visual appearance go together: an implant-borne restoration looks like a natural tooth – there is simply no visible difference, and special care is not required.

benifits-3.jpg
You can feel more comfortable talking, smiling and eating.

With dental implants, palatal plates required with conventional dentures are not necessary. You will feel more comfortable talking, smiling and eating.

YOUR TEETH DON'T HAVE TO BE GROUND DOWN.

With a conventional bridge, the healthy neighboring teeth to the right and left of the missing tooth have to be ground down to support the bridge. When using an implant to close the gap, the neighboring teeth are not affected and the natural tooth substance remains intact.

ROSHAN PANJU

BDS MFDS RCPS (GLASG)
IMPLANT DENTIST
GDC NO. 227495

Rosh qualified from Liverpool University Dental School in 2012. Following this he spent a lot of time training in various hospital specialties including the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery rotations. During this time, he also passed the prestigious Royal College Exams and gained membership to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He still does this 1-2 weekends a month as he has a passion for oral and facial surgery. This training gave him a great foundation for dental implants.

He also practices dentistry regularly at two dental clinics and is a visiting implantologist for three other dental practices. He enjoys all aspects of dentistry and therefore keeps his week quite varied. Hersham Dental Practice keeps abreast with new technology, and with the addition of the 3D Scanner, Rosh now does more teeth straightening cases with Invisalign and has had great results.

Rosh grew up on the island of Mombasa in Kenya and moved to Liverpool when he was 18. He is a keen hiker and did a few major peaks in Kenya including Mount Kilimanjaro. Before moving to Surrey, he lived in Pembrokeshire where he has hiked along the entire Coastal Path (the longest in the UK). In his spare time, he is a keen badminton player. He has joined a few of the local leagues and plays at least twice a week. He also enjoys an intense game of squash.

"Saturday 22nd February, I visited the practice to have extensive work carried out to my teeth . I have too say Wow from the moment I walked in too the end result . To both the dentist Rosh and the nurse Lucy thank you so much , I was sat in the chair for just under 4 hours . They made me at ease , no pain and continually asked if I was ok . I came out with new teeth that have transformed my life , I now smile with my mouth open. I would not hesitate to recommend this place , it's not 5 star - it's 7 star in my eyes . Again thank you , thank you , thank you"

"The entire team is awesome - I'm with them for about four years now and am very happy with my teeth and the treatment. Dr. Mawjee took care of a couple of crowns, some fillings and finished an implant job - for that he and his team went out of their way to get hold of the right tools (I started treatment in Germany, and the brand is not common here in the UK).

My son (6) is also very relaxed about his check-ups and not scared at all (he took several rides up and down the dentist chair) . Tina, the practice manager is a pleasure to interact with and accommodates my schedule, even with short notice changes. Would recommend giving them a try."

"After shattering my jaw in a sporting accident & losing 3 teeth, Alison was able to give me a smile again just in time for my wedding! My replacement teeth are fantastic and the extra effort to colour match them really paid off as no one can tell they're not real. Thank you"

WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Dental implants offer a permanent solution for your missing teeth. A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. Often the implant can be placed at the same time as removal of the tooth, all on the same day.

If an implant has a screw-thread on its outer surface it can be screwed into position and if it does not, it is usually tapped into place. The main aim during installation of any implant is to achieve immediate close contact with the surrounding bone. This creates an initial stability, which over time is steadily enhanced by further growth of bone into microscopic roughnesses on the implant surface.

In order to support replacement teeth, dental implants normally have some form of internal screw thread or post space that allows a variety of components to be fitted. Once fitted, these components provide the foundation for long-term support of crowns, bridges or dentures.

Have you lost all or some of your natural teeth? Bridges, dentures and flexible dentures are not the only solution, thanks to advances in modern dentistry. Have you heard of dental implants? Implant dentistry offers a clinically proven and safe solution to getting a great smile back and being able to bite and chew with confidence.

HERE IS HOW DENTAL IMPLANTS WORK:

1. Dental implants are small metal screws that are placed in the jaw in place of a missing tooth.

2. Once established, crowns, bridges and dentures can be fixed onto the implants, creating a         natural-looking and stable restoration.

LIFE BENEFITS

When you lose your natural teeth, your jaw bone and surrounding tissues start to resorb or disappear over time. When implants are placed in the jaw, it stimulates the remaining bone to grow and mesh around the metal, along with tiny blood vessels, preventing bone loss.

Retained bone structure prevents the face from acquiring a 'sunken' look.

Implants help restore function so you can eat, chew and bite as usual.

Implants are a natural-looking way to replace missing teeth.
